I had the privilege of hearing a very powerful speech an older man gave many years ago when I was much younger. I was somewhere between my late teens and early twenties. I was unaware at the time just how much this speech would benefit me later on in life. I find that a lot of things I learned when I was younger have had a greater impact on my life as I have gotten older. I think this has a lot to do with the experiences I have had later in life, where this type of information really comes in handy.

This man’s speech was about the practical ways we should live our lives. He made a statement in his speech that left a deep impression on my mind. I can remember this statement as if he said it yesterday. He said, “If you don’t learn from the past, you’ll be forced to repeat it.” Sometimes people make mistakes, and failure to learn from these mistakes causes them to suffer the consequences all over again. I have seen this happen to people time after time in my lifetime.

So then, in view of these mistakes, I came to realize it was important for me to learn from them, so I would not be forced to repeat them. Failure to learn from these mistakes would jeopardize the new lease on life that I enjoy so much. I am ever mindful of my past mistakes, so I can continue moving forward and making progress for a healthier way of life.

Looking back, I can see that it was good that I attended this man’s power speech program. Sometimes, when you are young, you don’t always understand the value of the things you are taught until you get older. In my case, it was a change of circumstances in my life, where I experienced weight gain, that made me reflect on this powerful speech I heard many years ago. I am determined to use the value of this speech to help me safeguard and protect my new lease on life!
